| | Enquiring Minds Programme | | The Sci-Bono Discovery Centre warmly invites your school to participate in our Enquiring Minds Programme taking place at the centre from 20 January 2014 to 28 February 2014. The programme is suitable for Grade 1 to 3 learners. Learners will participate in various stimulating and enjoyable activities themed around: My first Chemistry Class, Space & the Solar System, Water, Insect Life Cycles or Recycling. The duration of the programme will be from 9:30 to 12:00. | | The International Year of Crystallography | | The International Year of Crystallography 2014 (IYCr2014) commemorates not only the centennial of X-ray diffraction, which allowed the detailed study of crystalline material, but also the 400th anniversary of Kepler's observation in 1611 of the symmetrical form of ice crystals, which began the wider study of the role of symmetry in matter. Goals
The major objectives of the IYCr2014 are: • to increase public awareness of the science of crystallography and how it underpins most
technological developments in our modern society
• to inspire young people through public exhibitions, conferences and hands-on demonstrations in
schools
• to illustrate the universality of science
• to intensify the programme Crystallography in Africa and create similar programmes in Asia and
Latin America
• to foster international collaboration between scientists worldwide, especially North–South
contributions
• to promote education and research in crystallography and its links to other sciences
• to involve the large synchrotron and neutron radiation facilities worldwide in the celebrations

| Electronics Club
(Grade 10-11) | | The Electronics Club is aimed at improving Grade 10 & 11 learners technical and theoretical electronic skills through enjoyable, interactive and informal club sessions. Learners assemble and test various electronic circuits. The content for the sessions is selected according to Electrical Technology Curriculum. The sessions take place on Thursday afternoons at 14h30. |

| | Advanced Rocketry Course (Grade 11) | | Teams of Grade 11 students are trained to be rocket scientists … well at least amateur ones. The teams will construct and launch a rocket. They will learn about the history, applications, physics, chemistry, economics and mathematics of rocketry. The first term course will run from 31 March to 4 April. Space is limited and booking is essential. |

Dow Laboratory.
The Dow Laboratory will guide your learners through various practical experiments that are aligned to the national curriculum. The experiments that are on offer in the first quarter of 2014 are: Physical Sciences
• Heating and Cooling Curve of water
(Grade 10)
Investigate the effect of heat on the phases of matter and determine the rate at which heat is absorbed or released from water. • Newton's Second law (Grade 11)
The relationship between force, mass and acceleration are investigated to prove Newton's second law of motion, F= ma. Is force directly proportional to mass and acceleration? We will find out. | • Preparation of Esters (Grade 12)
In this part of carbon chemistry, we will perform estirification reactions in which a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol. Aromatic products are formed with various sweet smells. These esters are used as additives to flavor various foods. Life Sciences
• Food tests (Grade 10)
Explore the different food classes, namely arbohydrates, proteins and fats. Various food samples are analysed and tested for the different classes of foods. • Examining Microbial cultures and Flower structures (Grade 11)
What do microorganisms look like? And what is inside a flower? Students use light microscopes to observe and examine various types of microorganisms. They will also dissect various flowers and observe their macroscopic parts, relating them to the type of pollination strategy they use. • DNA Extraction (Grade 12)

Do apples have more vitamin C than bananas? Test various fruits and compare their vitamin C content while exploring the importance of vitamins in our diet. Does matter matter? (Grade 5-7)
Explore the properties of various materials to determine their usefulness for particular applications. Students will also investigate various methods to separate mixtures; such as how to separate a mixture of sand, water, marbles and paperclips. Acid Mine Drainage (Grade 8-9)

This year we’ll focus a bit more on fitness & schoolwork. Jesse has taken it on himself to become our personal trainer & sees to it that we do exercise daily on top of going to gym twice a week. He is scheduled to finish 10th grade at the end of Jan after starting it on the 1st of May last year. He will also be doing his SAT exams during the course of this year. Of course he’s also counting the days until he can go for his learner’s licence in June. I’ll be rather happy to have my own private chauveur once the nervousness of teaching him to drive has subsided.
Clive insisted that Misha gets back to doing formal curricula this year, so he’s been doing placement tests the last 2 weeks in order for me to ascertain which grade curriculum I need to get him. He chose to learn Afrikaans this year too, so there’s another challenge. This time we’ll focus on learning to speak & understand the language rather than working through workbooks that merely produce rote memorisation. At least he has had a nice long break from “schoolwork” & is now more motivated to start learning again. I’m hoping that the Switched on Schoolhouse material will work as well with him as it does for Jesse, but I know I’ll need to find alternative resources in some areas to cater for his learning style to help him retain the material.
Last week marked the first of Honey Badgers for this year. Misha still enjoys these monthly zoo outings & we’ll keep them up until he gets tired of them. He seems to have lost interest in the drum lessons but we need to find him some alternative Robotics classes since the JEFA team will now be focusing on the schools & no longer offer the weekly lessons for homeschoolers, much to his disappointment.
