The programme is suitable for Grade 1 to 3 learners. | | Advanced Rocketry Course (Grade 11) | Teams of Grade 11 students are trained to be rocket scientists … well at least amateur ones. The teams will construct and launch a rocket. They will learn about the history, applications, physics, chemistry, economics and mathematics of rocketry. The first term course will run from 31 March to 4 April. Space is limited and booking is essential. |

| | Meet the people behind the science with Sci-Bono's monthly Speak2aScientist programme: | • Interact with local and international scientists • Keep abreast of current science and technology; • Participate in topical science debates. Speak2aScientist takes place on the last Thursday evening of the month, 18h00 for 18h30 and lasts until 20h30. | LEARN MORE >> | | | | Dow Laboratory. The Dow Laboratory will guide your learners through various practical experiments that are aligned to the national curriculum. The experiments that are on offer in the first quarter of 2014 are: Physical Sciences • Heating and Cooling Curve of water (Grade 10) Investigate the effect of heat on the phases of matter and determine the rate at which heat is absorbed or released from water. • Newton's Second law (Grade 11) The relationship between force, mass and acceleration are investigated to prove Newton's second law of motion, F= ma. Is force directly proportional to mass and acceleration? We will find out. | • Preparation of Esters (Grade 12) In this part of carbon chemistry, we will perform estirification reactions in which a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol. Aromatic products are formed with various sweet smells. These esters are used as additives to flavor various foods. Life Sciences • Food tests (Grade 10) Explore the different food classes, namely arbohydrates, proteins and fats. Various food samples are analysed and tested for the different classes of foods. • Examining Microbial cultures and Flower structures (Grade 11) What do microorganisms look like? And what is inside a flower? Students use light microscopes to observe and examine various types of microorganisms. They will also dissect various flowers and observe their macroscopic parts, relating them to the type of pollination strategy they use. • DNA Extraction (Grade 12) What is the recipe for life? In this practical,the DNA of various fruits is extracted from the nucleus of their tissue cells. Test various fruits and compare their vitamin C content while exploring the importance of vitamins in our diet. Does matter matter? (Grade 5-7) Explore the properties of various materials to determine their usefulness for particular applications. Students will also investigate various methods to separate mixtures; such as how to separate a mixture of sand, water, marbles and paperclips. Acid Mine Drainage (Grade 8-9) Explore acids and bases using various indicators and learn about Acid Mine Drainage. What is it, how does it form and what impact does it have on our environment? Dissecting the periodic table (Grade 10-12) Explore different elements on the periodic table focusing on their reactivity and the compounds they form when reacting with other elements.
