Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers

Although he was achieving good results, he wasn't reaching his full potential because his love for learning had been destroyed & hence his grades were steadily declining.

Lilypie Kids Birthday tickers

Completely failed by the system, he hated school, was always tired & homework time was a major frustration for both of us. He was severely frustrated & quickly heading to become yet another ADHD statistic.

Cultural Exchange Parcel to Australia, Sweden & USA

2012_0429_160521

We signed up for the Cultural Exchange at the Little Red Farm this year. The aim of this exchange is sharing information about the country you reside in with other families in your allocated group so they can get the feel for the culture of that country. This is achieved by sending a package to the family (usually addressed to the child or children) with bits and pieces that you have chosen to give a good overview of what it is like to live there.2012_0429_162859

Our Parcel includes:

1. South African Flag
2. Fridge magnet note pad
3. South Africa key ring
4. Africa fridge magnet
5. S.Africa Beads Bracelet
6. Animal Beads Key ring
7. Ivory Spoon
8. Rooibos Tea
9. Animal JelliTots
10. South African Coins ~ 5, 10, 20 & 50 Cents 1 & 2 Rand
11. Small South African flags
12. Informative CD which includes information, images & music etc. from our country.

We sent off our parcels representing SA to Australia, Sweden, Florida, USA as well as Maryland, USA today. I had to send them surface mail, because airmail is quite expensive, but they should arrive at their destinations within 6 – 8 weeks.

I trust our recipients will find just as much pleasure in exploring the contents as we’ve had putting it together.

Cultural Exchange Parcel from Maryland

2012_0502_134325Today we received our second parcel from our Cultural Exchange Group. This time we thank Erin Franey and her 10th Grade class from Perry Hall High school in Maryland, a state situated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the USA. It  borders Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east.Map of the United States with Maryland highlighted
This time our parcel contained a variety of items to teach us more about Maryland and it’s people.
  • An American Flag ~ the flag represents the country and each of the 50 starts represent one it’s 50 states.
  • A Pillow/Pet ~ this is a pillow & a pet that represents Maryland’s baseball team, the Orioles.
  • Ravens Football Magnet ~ Ravens is the Maryland NFL team. Football is only played during the winter season & everyone gets excited. Maryland’s biggest rival is the Pittsburg steelers.
  • Old Bay Spice ~ this is used mostly on Seafood. It is rather spicy but apparently very delicious. They commonly put it on Maryland Craps. Old Bay gives it a very spicy & salty flavour.
  • Idahoan Buttery Homestyle Mashed Potatoes ~ this mixing powder for potatoes is very easy to make and very popular there.
  • Frizbee ~ this is a fun family game for whole families to enjoy. Having a great time with family is really important in Virginia.
  • The Old Line State Deck of Playing Cards
  • Baseball ~ Baseball is America’s past time & all time highest paying sport.
  • Lego Batman Comic ~ this is about Batman and Robin fighting crime & saving their city.
  • Silly Bands ~ these rubber bands have shapes and can be worn as bracelets.
  • Baltimore Keyring
Misha has hijacked the Pillow/Pet & Jesse’s claimed the baseball. As for the other items, I suppose they’ll end up in the display cabinets with our other overseas memorabilia.
We also sent off our parcels representing SA to Australia, Sweden, Florida, USA as well as Maryland, USA today.

Cultural Exchange

2012_0418_164158I signed up for the Cultural Exchange at the Little Red Farm this year. The aim of this exchange is sharing information about the country you reside in with other families in your allocated group so they can get the feel for the culture of that country. This is achieved by sending a package to the family (usually addressed to the child or children) with bits and pieces that you have chosen to give a good overview of what it is like to live there.

We have received our first parcel today from Albin & Edwin all the way from Sweden & what a nice surprise it was. Now this is a much more interesting way of learning geography than how I remember learning from our school days.

The parcel contained a variety of small items teaching us more about Sweden & it’s people as can be seen in the photo album:
  • Small & bigger Swedish Flags
  • Pippi longstocking Colour sheets
  • Pippi Longstocking Stickers
  • Bamse and his Friends (Skalman the Turtle and Lille Skutt a very scared little Rabbit) Plasters
  • A small copy of a painting showing Stockholms Old Town made by their father
  • Balloons
  • Candy “Sweden’s most sold car” ~ These were a hit with the boys & Misha just wanted me to get more…
  • A Swedish cheese cutter ~ apparently these are a necessity of life for the Swedes
  • Easter Ornaments ~ Sadly the egg got a little dented in the mail but Misha just loved the little chick.
  • An Easter card
  • A teabag with a member of the Swedish royal family on
  • A postcard over Stockholm

Of course it also included a letter addressed to the boys with some interesting facts about Sweden, it’s people and describing what it is like to live there.

Thank you Albin & Edwin for a wonderful learning experience for Geography.

Our parcels are still in the making & I’m aiming to have them completed when we get back from our 1 week holiday in Cape Town on the 28th April & sent out by the middle/end of May.
